Half the dead ports we see are simply packed with pocket lint, and we clean those out while you wait instead of selling you a repair you do not need. When the port really is worn or bent, we replace it — on some models that is a small connector board, on others it is careful soldering work done at the bench.
Bring it in when the cable only charges at a certain angle, the phone charges from one outlet but not another, or charging stopped after a drop. A failing port quietly kills batteries too, since the phone charges in little bursts all night, so it is worth fixing early.
